School Council

Minutes of meeting – 2/11/04

1.            School Council Representatives – behaviour   I t was agreed that the School Behaviour Policy would be applied to School Council Representatives, behaviour, and that three recurrent instances of misbehaviour would be also reported at the next School Council meeting. School Council members would then decide whether or not they wanted the person to continue to be a class representative. If a person was removed from the School Council, their parents would receive a letter explaining the situation.

2.            Buddy System School Council members decided to adopt the idea of ‘Playground Friends’, and to use that title. Two friends from each year group would be needed for each playtime session – a total of ten a week. These Playground friends would be elected by children in each year group. They could be anyone – not just SC members. Half-termly or termly elections would be used so that the work would be shared. In the playground they would be identified by wearing a large badge, band or bib. The children were very enthusiastic about the idea and suggested mutli-role functions for the Playground Friends. Their task specification would have to be written so that they were clear about their role.

3.            Playground markings These were commented upon favourably by all Members.

4.            Water Bottles It was reported that children in Comet Class were already bringing their own water bottles and keeping them in a marked place in the classroom (filled only with water). It was suggested that children in all other classes did the same. Use of the water bottles would be at the direction of the teacher, but their use should not interrupt work or intrude on the normal classroom procedures (e.g. ‘Can I have a drink’ as they are told to line up or immediately following another instruction, would not be acceptable).

5.            Playtime snacks The new snacks were preferred by all. It was suggested that more fruit choices should be provided if possible. An issue was raised about children taking snacks without having paid for them. Mr Baker said that a list of children who had paid for snacks for the half-term / term would be sent to each class. This would be attached to each snacks box. Each class should appoint 2 lunch monitors. At playtimes children having school snacks should line up (a table at a time if there were large numbers of them) and the monitors should then serve the snacks. Children should not be allowed to take them without supervision. When this is finished, all the class could then be sent out to play.
